This research (here the official paper)from 1996 explores various interaction principles with an spatially aware display. The image above shows how a user could navigate an information space simply with by moving his handheld dispay.

Especially interesting are the navigation principles defined in this research:

The Boom Chamelon is a newer version (from 2003) of this concept.
